In August last year, Ajay Singh, co-founder and managing director of SpiceJet, received a congratulatory call from Kalanithi Maran, the former promoter of the airlines. Having returned to the helm in January 2015, at a time when the company was wading through losses to the tune of Rs 2.82 crore a day and staring at an imminent shutdown of operations, Singh had turned around its fortunes -- recording a profit of Rs 71.85 crore in that years April-June quarter. Compliments aside, Maran had a pertinent question in mind: How was such a remarkable turnaround possible? Singhs reply was simple: by just working on the basics. On Sunday, 51-year-old Singh was elected to head another body in the doldrums, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI). In this case too he feels that a return to the basics will help.Much like in the case of SpiceJet earlier, here too the morale is extremely low and people have given up hope but theres a sense of underlying passion, he told ESPN. I think people see a great deal of inspiration in the SpiceJet story -- how something which was completely dead and nearly buried was put back on its feet and is doing so well. It can definitely be replicated in boxing.Following the suspension of the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) for manipulating its elections in 2012, the state of the sport in the country has been abysmal. Without domestic tournaments, rankings and international exposure, boxers have borne the brunt of the administrative chaos. The goal will be to re-focus on the sport rather than the politics involved in running it, Singh said. We want to restore and improve upon Indias former position as a force to be reckoned with in boxing, he said. We need to organize camps and begin preparations for Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. Boxers have suffered enough. The newly elected chief promised that the boxing nationals, which havent been conducted for four years, will be resurrected soon. He even had possible dates in mind. Our target is to hold womens nationals on or around November 15 and the mens competition on December 1, Singh said. But the immediate objective would be to gain world governing body AIBAs recognition at the earliest so Indian boxers can resume competing under the national flag at international meets. AIBA Oceania zone vice-president Edgar Tanner, who was present as an observer during the BFI elections, is understood to be satisfied with their conduct and is expected to forward his report to the world body in the next couple of days. We should be back in the fold within the next month or two, said Singh.A member of the BJPs 2014 election campaign committee, Singh is credited with coining the widely successful catchphrase Ab ki baar, Modi sarkaar (Vote in Narendra Modis government this time). We wanted a slogan which had a mention of Modi and so came up with a spin-off from our earlier line, Abki baari, Atal Bihari [the former prime minister AB Vajpayee], Singh said. It just clicked. It was crazy: both the reactions and the alliterations that followed.Singh is aware that to succeed and sustain, a sport needs to be strengthened at the grassroots. Robust training at the sub-junior level, more tournaments across all tiers and a transparent selection policy will form the core of the revamped system he has in mind. Most importantly, selection polices must be guided by merit instead of a regional or quota system, he said. We must set up a world-class boxing academy, host more international tournaments and form a boxing league. And once faith in the BFI is restored, funds would not be hard to find. Corporates look for certainty and visibility, and if we have that going, money will flow in, he said.It was during Vijender Singhs home pro debut bout against Australias Kerry Hope in New Delhi in July this year, sponsored by his company, that Singh found greater conviction in pitching himself for his latest role. One where he felt he could make a difference. Im always happy to look at troubled scenarios and help them get back on their feet, Singh said.Indian boxing could, after all, find its wings again. PITTSBURGH -- Connor McDavid skated into the faceoff circle and looked up and there he was: his childhood idol Sidney Crosby. The NHLs future vs. the NHLs present. And as mature as the Edmonton Oilers rising 19-year-old star can be on the ice, even he was a momentarily starstruck by the Pittsburgh Penguins captain. The proof came in what happened next.It was pretty funny that I take the opening draw against him and have him snap it back, McDavid said. I dont even think I got my stick on it.The jitters vanished almost instantly. McDavid more than held his own in his first meeting with the two-time MVP, picking up three assists. The Penguins, however, rallied for a 4-3 victory behind Conor Shearys two goals, including the winner with 1:42 left.Every game were down two we still think we have a chance to win, Sheary said. McDavids line provided all three goals, with Jordan Eberle getting two and Patrick Maroon getting the other, all on set-ups by McDavid. He doesnt need a lot of time and space, Crosby said. Its one thing to kind of watch games and see it, but out there you can really tell he needs no time and space at all. If youre even with him, youre in big trouble so you better make sure youre a step ahead. The Penguins took a 1-0 lead 1:557 in on Shearys goal before McDavid went to work proving what the fuss was all about.dddddddddddd He kickstarted a mini 2-on-1 with Eberle and slipped a short crossing pass to his teammate that Eberle buried over Murrays glove 14:23 into the first. McDavid was a blur less than three minutes later, racing into the Pittsburgh zone then weaving his way around defenseman Brian Dumoulin before finding Maroon.Theyre quick, theres no question, Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. They play a similar game to us. I thought we handled it just fine. I thought the pace of the game was fast. It was an exciting game to be a part of.The Penguins, fresh off a 3-0-1 road trip fueled by a resurgent Crosby, briefly found themselves flat-footed trying to keep pace. Talbot turned away a 4-on-1 break to set up an Edmonton rush that ended with Eberle skating in alone on Murray before sending the puck past the sprawled goaltender.Pittsburgh recovered to tie it, with Hagelin burying a rebound late in the second to bring the Penguins within a goal and Malkin tying it 5:33 into the third with a backhand deflection. The Penguins kept the pressure up late, resulting in Shearys second of the night and third of the season.Theyre never out of a game, McDavid said.
