KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Sore ribs finally landed Yankees infielder Eduardo Nunez on the disabled list Sunday, forcing the team to select the contract of Alberto Gonzalez from Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre. Nunez has been trying to deal with soreness on his left side for a while, and even hit in the batting cage when the team arrive in Kansas City. But he didnt progress to the point where he could play, instead becoming the 12th player to land on the Yankees DL this season. "Instead of trying to test it every day to see where hes at, were just going to give him three, four, five days, maybe try to get him swinging early next week, in the middle sometime," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "If he feels like hes ready, well try to get him out on some rehab games. It just wasnt where we wanted and we felt like we couldnt go any longer." The Yankees have been playing with a short bench while waiting for Nunez to come around for about a week. His move to the DL was backdated to May 6. "I feel better every day," said Nunez, who was hitting .200 in 27 games primarily in place of injured shortstop Derek Jeter. "Its better every day, but slow." Gonzalez was acquired from the Chicago Cubs late Thursday for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The Yankees cleared space for him on the 40-man roster by transferring first baseman Mark Teixeira to the 60-day disabled list. Gonzalez was hitting .217 in 11 games for the Cubs, and is familiar to the Yankees, having made his big league debut for them during the 2007 season. He was traded to Washington in 2008. "Hes a very good defender," Girardi said. "Hes a guy who can do some things with the bat and were happy to have him." The decision to put Nunez on the DL on Sunday wasnt he only bit of injury news for the banged-up Yankees, who are already closing in on the number of stints they had all of last season. Right-hander Ivan Nova, who is already on the DL with inflammation in his right triceps, experienced soreness in his ribs while playing toss on Sunday morning. Thats forced Girardi to scrap his plan of pitching him in Mondays doubleheader at Cleveland. Girardi had just received word of the irritation from the Yankees medical staff, and wasnt sure whether Nova would undergo any sort of tests on his left side. David Phelps will pitch the opener against the Indians, and Girardi said left-hander Vidal Nuno or right-hander Adam Warren could pitch Game 2. But that depends on whether the relievers are needed against the Royals are even in the opener in Cleveland, and Girardi didnt rule out having a starter from Triple-A stashed away at a nearby hotel in case hes needed Monday. Girardi did say that pitching CC Sabathia on short rest was not an option. "I dont want to say yet," Girardi said. "I think we have a plan, but I want to wait till tomorrow, because there are a lot of things that could happen." Antonio Gates Womens Jersey . The latest UK-based apprentice to travel to Victoria for a summer riding stint will hit the city arena in Melbourne for the first time when he rides at Sandown.English apprentice Patrick Paddy Pilley started a three-month loan with Flemington trainer Nigel Blackiston a couple of weeks ago and has already registered a winner at Geelong aboard Surge Ahead for trainer Vincent Malady. The 19-year-old will ride the Blackiston-trained Sonsee Array and Amortise on Wednesday.Pilley rode both horses in their most recent starts while on Sunday he was aboard the Blackiston-trained Amarela who finished fourth in the Listed Kilmore Cup.The trainer said he could not have asked for more from that ride.Hes ridden a winner, a couple of placings and if you watch his ride in the Kilmore Cup on my mare, it was a fantastic run, Blackiston said. From the outside barrier, to get home and run fourth it was a beautiful ride.Hes a very good horseman, typical of those European styles the way hes been taught.Hes a very capable young man and claims two kilos in the country and in the metropolitan area.Oisin Murphy had a successful summer stint in Melbourne with trainer Danny OBrien in 2013/14.Murphy, now the retained rider in Britain for Qatar Racing, rode a feature race winner for Blackiiston during that time aboard Outback Joe in the Bagot Handicap on New Years day.dddddddddddd.Blackiston said a recommendation from Murphy led to Pilleys stint with his stable.Kieran Shoemark is another who has had summer stints in Melbourne, while last summer Tom Marquand made his mark when he spent a few weeks with the Lindsay Park team.Pilley had his first Australian ride on six-year-old Amortise who finished sixth in a benchmark 64 (1400m) at Bendigo on November 9 at his first start for 12 months.Amortise steps to 1800m in the Polytrack Handicap while three-year-old filly Sonsee Array chases a maiden win in the Moorookyle Park Stud Plate (1800m) after making ground when fourth in a 1600m maiden at Moe last start.Blackiston also has Itchikoo Park in that race.I thought it was a nice run from Amortise first-up and he can take good benefit from that but he will improve more with another run under his belt, Blackiston said.Sonsee Array, I thought her run was excellent the other day on an unsuitable sort of track at Moe. She got around the turns and finished off strongly.I think the extra distance will suit her down to the ground. ' ' '
