DETROIT -- The Chicago White Sox knew they were in trouble when Tim Anderson grounded out to end the fourth inning.Chicago still led 3-0, but they had just left the bases loaded without scoring -- something they have done too many times this season.Thats really been our Achilles heel all season, Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. We get a lead, and we give ourselves a chance to add to it, and we dont take it.The White Sox had done the same thing Monday night in a loss to the Tigers, and it cost them again Tuesday. Detroit scored twice in the fifth inning and four times in the sixth on their way to an 8-4 win.Thats what makes Detroit so good, Chicagos Adam Eaton said. You saw it yesterday and today. When they get started offensively, they keep going. We had that bases loaded opportunity and didnt get anything out of it, but when they have a chance to get more runs, they come up with a big hit. We havent done that all year. The White Sox might have expected a Detroit rally, and couldnt have been surprised that Ian Kinsler was a big part of it. What they probably werent expecting was JaCoby Jones. In his major league debut, Jones gave the Tigers the lead with a sixth-inning double, and then added a second RBI in the seventh.Thats something Ill never forget, my first big league hit, he said. Its something you work hard for to get here and to do it in the first night at the plate, its simply amazing.Kinsler came into the game hitting .085 (4 for 47) in his last 13 games, but he hit a two-run homer in the fifth and added a two-run single in Detroits four-run sixth inning. He didnt mind the spotlight shining on Jones. To have your first hit be a big one, with your family here, thats very cool to see, he said of his rookie teammate. He even got the post-game interview and the ice-bucket shower. Thats a great night for him.Todd Frazier homered for Chicago.Bruce Rondon (5-2) picked up the win in relief of Daniel Norris, who allowed three runs in five innings.Matt Albers (2-6) took the loss, allowing three runs in the sixth after relieving Anthony Ranaudo.Chicago went ahead with three runs in the second. Frazier provided the first two with his 33rd homer, but Norris couldnt stop the rally there. Omar Narvaez walked, took third on Tyler Saladinos double and scored on Adam Eatons groundout. The White Sox loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth, but Norris was able to induce an inning-ending groundout from Anderson. That proved important when Kinsler drove a hanging curveball deep into the stands in left field to make it 3-2 in the fifth. It took us a while to get going against Ranaudo, because he had the curveball working, he was erratic with his fastball and he was mixing in a changeup and a slider, Kinsler said. He was just throwing the ball well, but Daniel kept us in the game.Ranaudo returned for the sixth, but was yanked after allowing a leadoff double to J.D. Martinez. Justin Upton greeted Albers with a tying single to center, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia walked. Jones slapped a double down the right-field line for his first hit and first RBI.Kinsler followed with a two-run single to give Detroit a 6-3 lead. Chicago got a run back in the seventh on Melky Cabreras groundout, but Shane Greene struck out Jose Abreu and Justin Morneau with a runner on third.J.D. Martinez restored Detroits three-run lead with a solo home in the seventh, his third extra-base hit of the game. Jones made it 8-4 late in the inning with a single through a drawn-in infield.TRAINERS ROOMWhite Sox: RHP Miguel Gonzalez (groin) is expected to start a rehab assignment this week, while INF Brett Lawrie continues his with Double-A Birmingham. . LF Cabrera left the game late due to an illness, but expects to play Wednesday.Tigers: With CF Cameron Maybin still sidelined for a few days with a wrist injury, Detroit promoted Jones from Triple-A Toledo. Jones, acquired from Pittsburgh for Joakim Soria at last years trading deadline, can play both third base and center, allowing him to fill in for both Maybin and Nick Castellanos (hand). He started at third on Tuesday.UP NEXTThe teams finish their three-game series Wednesday afternoon, with aces Justin Verlander (14-7, 3.33) and Chicagos Chris Sale (15-7, 3.14) facing off. SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Blaine Gabbert had the stage to himself in San Franciscos quarterback competition with Colin Kaepernick nursing a sore shoulder and provided a strong finish to an uneven performance in the exhibition opener.Gabbert overcame a shaky start to throw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Vance McDonald before the Houston Texans rallied in the second half against San Franciscos reserves to beat the 49ers 24-13 on Sunday. There were ups and downs, Gabbert said. But we saw when we got into the groove what we can do as a unit.Brock Osweiler didnt fare as well in his Texans debut, failing to lead Houston to any points in three drives. Houston got on the board early when John Simon returned a fumble by Carlos Hyde 41 yards for a touchdown but struggled to generate any offense with its starters. Was it completely what I wanted tonight? Absolutely not. But rarely is it ever, Osweiler said. I think the biggest thing about tonight is we did some really good things offensively and we know we have some things that we need to work on and grow and get better at.With Kaepernick sitting out with tightness in his throwing shoulder, Gabbert got to make his case in the battle to win San Franciscos starting quarterback job for first-year coach Chip Kelly.Gabbert, who started the final eight games last season, did little to improve his position in the first two drives. He was off-target on his first two passes as San Francisco went three-and-out in 41 seconds on the opening drive and started the game 1 for 6 overall. But he was much more effective on the third drive when he scrambled 13 yards for a first down and then hit McDonald for the long score when Benardrick McKinney slipped in coverage. The good thing is that he did settle down, Kelly said. There were some real positives that we can build on but there were some throws that even if you ask Blaine, hed say he wished he had those back.Gabbert finished 4 for 10 for 63 yards and a touchdown.Osweiler, who signed a $72 million, four-year contract with Houston in the offseason, went 4 for 7 foor 27 yards.dddddddddddd He took one sack and left for good after throwing an incomplete pass to Braxton Miller on fourth down early in the second quarter. To put on the Texan uniform, and run out of the tunnel as a team for the first time, it was certainly special, Osweiler said.Tom Savage threw two TD passes in the second half for Houston, connecting on a 9-yarder to former California receiver Stephen Anderson and a 9-yarder to Akeem Hunt in the fourth quarter.ROOKIE WATCHTexans: Miller, a third-round pick, had four catches for 34 yards, including an acrobatic 24-yard gain in the third quarter from Savage. First-round pick Will Fuller had just one catch for 4 yards.49ers: First-round DL DeForest Buckner was pushed around a bit in the running game and finished with one solo tackle and two assists.INJURY UPDATETexans: CB A.J. Bouye sat out after injuring his groin Friday in practice and will have an MRI on Monday.49ers: Backup QB Thad Lewis was 12 for 21 for 97 yards before leaving the game with a lower-leg injury. ... Watt sidelined with a back injury. Covington forced the fumble by Hyde that led to Houstons first score.49ers: RT Anthony Davis, who sat out last year in temporary retirement, played with the second string behind Trent Brown in his first game in more than 19 months and was beaten by Eric Lee for a sack late in the first half.QUOTABLETexans: Knowing my family and friends are in the stands really supporting me, that was a dream come true, said Anderson, who grew up in nearby San Jose.49ers: Colin isnt 100 percent, Kelly said.
