LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- Germany went five days without winning a World Cup doubles medal. For USA Luge, the wait was six years. Both had ample reason to celebrate Friday. The German duo of Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken won the World Cup luge doubles race at Mount Van Hoevenberg on Friday, edging the American team of Matt Mortensen and Jayson Terdiman -- who took second on their home track for the first USA Luge medal on the circuit since 2010.Its been a long journey, for sure, Terdiman said.Eggert and Benecken finished their two runs in 1 minute, 28.382 seconds. Mortensen and Terdiman took the silver in 1:28.545, and Robin Johannes Geueke and David Gamm were third in 1:28.726.Eggert and Benecken are now 3-for-3 this season, having swept the doubles season openers at Winterberg last weekend. The last U.S. World Cup doubles medal was a bronze for Terdiman and Christian Niccum on Dec. 4, 2010. American doubles teams had not reached the podium in 60 World Cup races since, including sprint competitions. This one will taste better, I think, Terdiman said. The Americans didnt even have to wait to see the scoreboard at the finish line. From the roar of the crowd as they made their way out of the final turn, they knew a medal was theirs.Im really hoping this is the stepping stone for a brighter future, Mortensen said. This shows we can get in there. This was part of our four-year plan, to get a medal this season, and now weve done it early and this is fantastic.Mortensen and Terdiman held the lead for most of the first run, before Eggert and Benecken -- the last sled down the track in the opening heat -- edged them by 0.126 seconds. And that was essentially the final margin, though that didnt stop the Americans from celebrating wildly at the finish.U.S. womens luge star Erin Hamlin said Mortensen and Terdiman knew after last weekends World Cup opener, where they finished fourth in the sprint race and sixth in the doubles race, that they were sliding well enough to compete.Coming to home ice apparently was the final piece of the puzzle. This years been really good for them, Hamlin said. Theyve had really solid training. I think theyre finally at a point where theyre pretty comfortable on their sled, really enjoying sliding and feeling good about sliding. So I think its exciting to see.The mens singles race is later Friday, with the womens race and team relay event scheduled for Saturday. Its his game that was hurting him Thursday in the U.S. Open. Woods finished only 10 holes in the rain-delayed first round at Merion, spending far too much time trying to gouge out of the thick rough with a wedge. On at least four occasions, he was either flexing or shaking his left hand after the forceful shots. He was 2-over par when play was suspended because of darkness, leaving him about a 4-foot par putt on the 11th hole when he returns at 7:15 a.m. Friday. It was probably a good time for Woods to stop. He pulled his tee shot with an iron well left of the 11th fairway, and only the thick grass kept it from going into the creek. He took another powerful hack out of the rough to clear the winding creek that fronts the green, and then played a flop shot from the rough to 4 feet. When a USGA official mentioned that his wrist appeared to be a problem, Woods replied, "Its fine." With a better forecast the rest of the week, Woods will play 25 full holes on Friday and try to make up ground on the leaders. Phil Mickelson completed his round of 67, while Luke Donald was at 4-under and approaching the difficult, fivee-hole finish.dddddddddddd "Ive got a lot of holes to play tomorrow," Woods said. "And hopefully, I can play a little better than I did today." Woods has gone five years without winning a major, though his four PGA Tour wins in eight starts indicates that his game is in good shape. As hes done in other majors, Woods began with poor tee shot that found the rough on the gentle, opening hole at Merion. He grimaced after digging into the gnarly rough to hack out to the fairway and started with a bogey. The key to Merion is to hang on for the opening six holes, take advantage of the short stretch of holes in the middle, and try not to give back shots at the end. After that six-hole start, Woods had one par, two birdies and three bogeys. Two of the bogeys came from poor chip shots from just off the green at No. 3 and No. 5. What saved him was a 50-foot birdie putt on the sixth hole. But he failed to convert birdie chances on the seventh, eighth and 10th holes — all of them under 400 yards — and he three-putted the 237-yard ninth hole from about 65 feet to drop another shot. "Its going to be a fast night," Woods said as he left the course. ' ' '
