Derby County have confirmed that Kevin Phillips will stay on to assist new interim manager Darren Wassall after a day of upheaval at the iPro Stadium. Paul Clement, formerly assistant to Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, was removed from his duties on Monday evening after less than nine months in charge and with the Rams just five points off the top of the Championship. Phillips was appointed as assistant to Clement last September. Derby sack Clement Derby have sacked manager Paul Clement and replaced him with Darren Wassall The club have said that Wassall will remain in charge until the end of the season but Sky Sports News HQ reporter Rob Dorsett says it is possible the club may yet make a full-time appointment before then. Dorsett said: The news came as a bit of a surprise. It was quite a coup when Derby hired Paul Clement eight months ago. Hes been assistant to Carl Ancelotti at Real Madrid and PSG and he has built up quite a reputation around Europe. There were a lot of clubs interested in hiring him. Will Derby wait until the end of the season until they make a full-time appointment? Rob Dorsett, Sky Sports News HQ Chairman Mel Morris said at the time We have got to be patient but in fact, they gave him 30 games, they werent impressed with what they saw and decided to sack him. My understanding from my sources is that it was more of a disagreement behind the scenes, about the direction the club was taking, that led to this breakdown. He spent £21.5m on players but remember, the club sanctioned those sales. He has had problems with injuries and with Craig Forsyth out for the season, he had not had a recognised left-back. Former Derby player Marc Edworthy talks to Sky Sports News HQ after his old club sacked manager Paul Clement My sources say that Wassall, the former Academy director who has been at the club since 2009, will stay in charge until the end of the season. But the question remains, with names like Nigel Pearson and David Moyes out there, will Derby wait until the end of the season until they make a full-time appointment? The next couple of weeks, the next few games, will tell us a whole lot more.It has also been confirmed that first-team coach John Peacock and head of tactical analysis David Burke have left the club in the wake of Clements departure. Peacock, 59, returned to the club last summer after a spell working for the Football Association. Richard Keogh (right) has been handed the captains armband once more In other news, Richard Keogh has been reinstated as club captain, having been relieved of the armband after Clements appointment last summer.Clement named summer signing Chris Baird as the new skipper and, since then, Chris Martin and Stephen Warnock have also led the side. Veteran coach Wayne Bennett has defended the NRLs match review committee (MRC) and judiciary in the face of concerns about the systems inconsistency.Several players have expressed confusion over what constitutes a shoulder charge after Canberras Jack Wighton successfully fought a grade-two charge at the judiciary earlier this week.Wighton was facing a potential four-game ban after the MRC charged him, but it took the judiciary just minutes to agree with the Raiders fullback and dismiss the charge. Its the latest in a string of incidents this year where the MRC and judiciary appear to be at loggerheads over penalties and even offences.Brisbane coach Bennett doesnt think thats an issue however, saying the point of the judiciary is to deliberate on whether a charge is valid or not.You dont want to go in there with a stacked deck, Bennett said.Thats the last thing you want to do, that wouuld make it a bit of a farce.ddddddddddddhered be no confidence from the clubs about the game and how they administrate the game. You want that situation between both parties where one thinks that should be a charge and the other is big enough and strong enough to say well thats not guilty.Bennett says he isnt worried about the shoulder charge issue either, although he does admit the NRL has made a rod for their own back over the contentious issue.Theres a bit of a contradiction with shoulder charges, he said.If you carry the ball you can do what you like with the shoulder. Weve seen guys get hurt by using their shoulders when someones trying to defend them. Its not perfect but its the rule now, it wont be changed, so weve just got to live with it.AAP ej/wk ' ' '
