RIO DE JANEIRO -- When Michael Phelps decided to come out of retirement, he circled one race in particular on the Olympic schedule. The 200-meter butterfly. At the London Games, in what was supposed to be his Olympic farewell, Phelps was leading as he came to the wall in the stroke he does better than anyone. But he mistimed the finish, glided a little too long, and was edged by Chad le Clos. That result has irked Phelps ever since. On Tuesday night, hell get a chance to make amends against the South African.Call it the Rematch in Rio.Should be a fun race, Phelps said.Le Clos knows hell be facing the most decorated athlete in Olympic history, a highly motivated rival still at the top of his game as he showed in leading the United States to a stirring victory in the 4x100 freestyle relay. But Le Clos isnt backing down.May the best man win, he said. Ill race my heart out.A pair of Hungarians could also be part of the mix. Tamas Kenderesi posted the fastest time in the semifinals, edging out Phelps, and five-time Olympic medalist Laszlo Cseh put up the third-fastest time. Le Clos was fourth, not bad considering it was the back end of a grueling double, coming less than an hour after he claimed silver in the 200 freestyle.Of course theres a huge rivalry between Michael and myself, Le Clos said. I race to win and I want to beat Michael.Television cameras caught Phelps with a serious game face before the semifinal swim as he stared in the direction of Le Clos, a moment Twitter users immediately flipped into memes poking fun at Phelps intensity.Phelps will be going for the 20th gold medal of his career, but the South African has plenty of motivation, too. His parents, both battling cancer, are cheering him on in Rio.Its been very difficult, to say the least, the last few months, Le Clos said. When you swim for something greater than yourself, it can help you to achieve great things.Phelps will actually have two chances for gold on Tuesday. He will also be part of the 4x200 freestyle relay, a race the Americans have won at the last three Olympics. The U.S. will have a good shot at another gold in the womens 200 free, with Katie Ledecky looking to make it 2-for-2 in the longer freestyle events. She already crushed the world record in the 400 free, in addition to anchoring the Americans to a silver medal in the 4x100 free relay.Ledecky was second in the semifinals behind Swedens Sarah Sjostrom, gold medalist in the 100 butterfly. Its only a semi, Ledecky said. Its the third round that counts.Ledecky and Sjostrom arent the only women dominating at the pool.Hungarys Katinka Hosszu became the first two-time swimming gold medalist at the Rio Games with a victory in the 100 backstroke.Shell be favored for a third gold in the 200 individual medley, having obliterated the world record in the 400 IM. American Maya DiRado and Britains Siobhan-Marie OConnor, who was fastest in the semifinals, appear to be the most serious challengers to the Iron Lady.Phelps also took aim at swimmers linked to doping, an issue that has been at the forefront on the heels Russian doping scandal. Harsh words have been directed as athletes such as Yulina Efimova and Sun Yang, who previously served doping suspensions.Phelps joined the chorus of those demanding a clean competition.Youre probably going to see a lot of people speaking up more. I think something needs to be done, he said. Its sad that today in sports in general, not just only swimming, there are people who are testing positive who are allowed back in the sport -- and multiple times. It breaks my heart and I wish somebody would do something about it.---Follow Paul Newberry on Twitter at www.twitter.com/pnewberry1963 . But after three straight trips to the postseason and a 98-win season in 2015, the Pirates U-turn in 2016, to a spot 25 games behind the NL Central-winning Cubs, made this their most disappointing season since Barry Bonds left town a generation ago. That isnt just on the field: The franchise suffered its largest attendance drop in 15 years and fell from a top-10 team in the Ultimate Standings to one in the mid-40s.Whats goodAt least theyve got PNC Park! The Pirates got the best score in sports when asked if their team has a great stadium, and that waterfront property, combined with reasonable concessions and parking prices (and below-average ticket prices, despite a 27 percent increase this year), earned the team a ninth-place ranking in stadium experience. Even in a down year, the Pirates affordable prices and (mostly) competitive play combine for a strong bang for the buck (25th overall this year, though down from eighth in 2015). On the field, Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco arent Andrew McCutchens young proteges anymore. This was the year they actually passed McCutchen, and both are signed and under affordable control for the next five years.Whats badThe Pirates had the highest Opening Day payroll in their history ($99.9 million) this year. Has it peaked, at least for now? There were ominous signs at the trade deadliine, when the Pirates were alive in the wild-card race but still traded away both their closer (Mark Melancon) and Opening Day starter (Francisco Liriano) in the interest of saving themselves approximately $6.dddddddddddd5 million in salary this season, plus the $13.67 million Liriano was owed next year. Is Andrew McCutchen next to go? The longtime face of the franchise is coming off the worst season of his career, has one guaranteed season (plus a 2018 club option) left on his contract and could conceivably be shopped around this winter. Fans dont appear to have much confidence in owner Bob Nutting -- he fell 29 spots this year to 88th -- so they clearly wouldnt put it past him.Whats newAfter completing a season with their lowest win total since 2011, both manager Clint Hurdle (down 35 spots) and the roster (down 32) shared the blame. The good news: There are reinforcements on the way. The Pirates three best pitching prospects -- former No. 2 pick Jameson Taillon, Tyler Glasnow and Chad Kuhl -- all arrived this season, as did Josh Bell, the first baseman of the future. The bad news: This team needs to rediscover its touch for finding and reinventing what seemed like an endless string of pitching reclamation projects. Pittsburgh remains at the forefront of the sport in statistical analysis and creative thinking. But with their limited revenue and payroll, the Pirates need more things to go right than your average team. This year was a stark reminder of what happens when they dont.Next: Chicago Cubs?| Full rankings ' ' '
