GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- On a night when retired coach Steve Spurrier was honored along with his 1996 national championship team, No. 25 Florida looked nothing like a potential Southeastern Conference title contender.Luke Del Rio threw two touchdown passes in his first career start, and the Gators did just enough to beat UMass 24-7 on Saturday night and extend the nations longest winning streak in season openers to 27.It was far from the offensive resurgence the Gators were hoping for after ending last season with three consecutive losses. We have expectations every game, Del Rio said. We obviously want to score more points, but we got the win. Thats the most important thing.Things were so ugly for much of the night that Spurrier provided most of Floridas early highlights. After having Florida Field named after him and then leading 90,000 rain-soaked fans in a pre-game cheer, Spurrier posed like Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt. The 71-year-old Spurrier flashed Bolts To The World pose to all four sides of the newly renamed Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. It drew a raucous ovation from fans on hand for the opener.I just planned it myself, Spurrier said. I didnt tell anybody, either, `cause I thought theyd spill the beans. You know, its never been done before. Im a guy that likes to do a little different stuff, so I was the first to do the Usain in the middle of the field. Many inside the sold-out Swamp were there for Spurrier, who was honored in a number of ways. Not only was the field named after him, but Spurrier served as the honorary Mr. Two Bits. At halftime, he was recognized again for the 50th anniversary of his 1966 Heisman Trophy and honored along with the 1996 team.Spurrier said the best parts of the day were watching his name unveiled on the stadium and then seeing band members wearing visors to honor him.Florida coach Jim McElwain probably could have used one -- to slam to the ground. It was fun to get back after it and really get that taste of the last ballgame we played out of our mouth, McElwain said. Obviously, as you watched the game, weve got a long way to go.The Gators had trouble blocking the 36 1/2-point underdogs up front and creating holes in the running game. Del Rio completed 29 of 44 passes for 256 yards, with TD passes to Antonio Callaway in the first quarter and Brandon Powell in the fourth.Floridas defense was solid except for one scoring drive in which it was flagged three times for 35 yards and allowed a fourth-and-14 conversion.Newcomer Eddy Pineiro kicked three field goals, including from 49 and 48 yards in the fourth that gave Florida a little extra breathing room and started chants of Eddy! Eddy! This is a dream come true, said Pineiro, who played soccer in high school and had never kicked in a meaningful game. Ive worked my butt off for two years, came in here as an early enrollee and worked very hard for this moment.THE TAKEAWAYUMASS: The schedule doesnt look so daunting now. UMass has two more Southeastern Conference teams on tap this fall, but after watching Mississippi State (lost to South Alabama) and South Carolina (edged Vanderbilt) in openers, theres reason to believe coach Mark Whipples team can be in, or maybe even win, both of those games.FLORIDA: Could be another trying season for Florida quarterbacks. The Gators clearly still have holes along their offensive line, a problem that plagued the offense last year and really stood out during the season-ending, three-game losing streak.UP NEXTUMASS: The Minutemen return home to play Boston College, which is coming off a loss to Georgia Tech in Ireland. UMass has dropped eight in a row in the series and 19 of 23 overall.FLORIDA: Opens SEC play at home against Kentucky. The Gators have won 29 straight in the series, the nations longest active streak between any two opponents.---AP college football website: www.collegefootball.ap.orgAtlanta Braves Jerseys . MORITZ, Switzerland -- Fog prevented downhill racers from getting their Olympic dress rehearsal.Western Forces radical public ownership initiative has won the approval of Bill Pulver, with the Australian Rugby Union chief executive open to the idea of other Super Rugby franchises adopting the model.RugbyWA announced the ownership model last week to secure the future of the Western Force Super Rugby team ... in direct response to mounting speculation that the [ARU] is planning to cut one of the five Australian Super Rugby franchise teams at the end of the 2017 season due to financial pressure. The model, based on community-ownership principals, such as those that govern Spanish soccer powerhouse Barcelona and Green Bay Packers, is based on the sale of 5000 ownership certificates at a value of $AU1000. The certificates will not be transferrable, except to family members, while owners will be entitled to a range of benefits including voting rights to an advisory committee and the new Western Force board of management and approval of the reappointment of key positions within the Western Force organisation.Pulver said he was encouraged by the efforts coming out of the west.If there is strong financial support for any franchise that gave it a clearly sustainable financial future... Im all ears, The West Australian quoted Pulver as saying. The dialogue thats going on out west is incredibly relevant. If there is some new news that goes to the heart of our financial sustainability I want to hear about it.If there is any new financial news that could impact our final decision, if they are able to find potential partners or plans that result in a more sustainable environment for rugby, thats a great thing. To me it would be an important piece of the overall mix.Pulver told The Australian when asked whether he would like to see Australias other four Super Rugby franchises adopt the model that its one structural option that we would always be prepared to look at.If there is a third party interested in looking at any franchise that would result in greater sustainability, wed be prepared to look at it. [Public ownership] is certainly novel. I dont know that Ive heard of that approach in any other rugby franchise, but if there was a proposal somebody wanted to bring forward, we would certainly have a look at it.The development comes five months after the ARRU and RugbyWA finalised an alliance agreement that would see the Force continue as a West Australian team.dddddddddddd.Under the new agreement, the professional rugby program of the Western Force was integrated into the High Performance Unit of the ARU and all Western Force players and professional rugby staff became employees of the national body. The agreement comes after weeks of planning from both the ARU and RugbyWA as they addressed financial concerns resulting from the challenge of basing a rugby side away from Australian rugbys traditional heartland on the east coast and the changing economic climate in Western Australia, which has affected the clubs bottom line. The ARU and RugbyWA have collectively created a model which we believe will be more sustainable for our Super Rugby organisations in Australia, Pulver said in announcing that alliance.?Ultimately the alliance aims to deliver financial sustainability and improved high performance outcomes for the Western Force. The other really important outcome is that the Western Force will continue to be deeply entrenched in the Perth community. They will continue to have a brand which is unique to them. The Canberra-based Brumbies, meanwhile, are reported to be in discussions with the ARU about forming a financial alliance, with interim chief executive Phil Thomson telling The Australian that his board was undertaking a detailed strategic look at all medium- to long-term options to ensure the financial viability of the Brumbies. The ARU is looking to save money after announcing in April a loss of $AUS9.8 million for 2015 -- up from $AUS6.3 million in 2014.?The increased deficit was the result of having staged only two Tests in Australia in a Rugby World Cup year -- with subsequent impacts on broadcast, sponsorship and match day revenue -- and financial assistance provided to the Melbourne Rebels. The ARU hosts six inbound Tests in a non-World Cup yearARU officials said the financial forecast was stronger than 12 months before, thanks primarily to the 2016-2020 media rights arrangement that delivers an extra $AU170m over five years compared with the previous agreement.
