Defensive line coach Brady Hoke and defensive backs coach Jeff Imamura were fired during the season after Ron Rivera took over play-calling duties from defensive coordinator Eric Washington, a move that didn’t do much to help the team break out of a 1-7 skid to close out the second half of the season. If the Panthers are in the market for a wide receivers coach, I know just the guy who would be perfect for the job. He’s familiar with the Panthers organization and the city of Charlotte, and he thinks highly of the Panthers’ 2018 first round draft pick D.J. Moore. You know what to do, Ron. It’s time to bring Smitty home. Do it. The Panthers have a clear and definite need for an offensive tackle. Quite frankly, they need more than one. The Panthers currently have two tackles on the roster who have played in an NFL game (Taylor Moton and Matt Kalil), and one who signed a reserve future contract in December (Isaiah Battle). Basic math tells us that’s simply not enough depth to get through an entire season, especially when you factor in Kalil’s injury history. Today we’ve argued that the Panthers should use some of their draft capital on acquiring an offensive tackle. Below you will find a list of 12 prospects who the Panthers should consider drafting. To make things less complicated, I’ve broken down the prospects into three groups: Players who will likely be taken in the first round, players who will likely go on Day 2, and players who will likely be taken in the fourth round or later. (Note: The list follows the order of CBS Sports’ offensive tackle prospect rankings.)First round prospectsJonah Williams youth Luke Kuechly Jersey , AlabamaThere’s a strong chance that Williams is long gone by the time the No. 16 pick rolls around, but crazier things have happened. If he’s somehow still on the board when it’s time for the Panthers to pick and it’s not due to some weird criminal activity that leaks on draft night, Marty Hurney better sprint to the podium or be fired for criminal negligence.Greg Little, Ole MissLittle went to Ole Miss so he already loses points on decision making, but he’s a solid tackle who would fill the Panthers’ need quite well. He’s projected to go anywhere from the top ten all the way to the middle of the first round depending on who you ask, so there’s a chance he’ll be there when the Panthers pick at No. 16. If he is, it would be a wise move to take him.Cody Ford, OklahomaWalterFootball says that some sources believe Ford will have to move to guard in the NFL, but other sources believe he will be a fine left tackle at the next level. Even if the Panthers had to move him to left guard, there are holes all across the offensive line and it wouldn’t be the biggest mistake in the world, but I would want them to be confident that Ford can protect Cam Newton’s blind side if they’re going to spend a first round pick on him. If they’re not sure he can play left tackle, I would prefer them to pick someone else and grab a guard in the later rounds of the draft.Jawaan Taylor, FloridaCBS lists Taylor as the No. 4 tackle prospect, while WalterFootball ranks him No. 1 in this year’s crop. His availability at No. 16 overall will depend on which source NFL scouts agree with. If they agree with CBS Stitched Luke Kuechly Jersey , there’s a chance the Panthers can nab him in the first round. If they agree with WalterFootball, it’s pretty much guaranteed that one of the top ten teams will get him.Day 2 prospectsDavid Edwards, WisconsinWalterFootball ranks Edwards as a Day 2 guy, so I’m not sure the value is there for the Panthers to take him at No. 16 overall. CBS seems to agree as they have him as the No. 56 overall prospect in this year’s class. If he’s still on the board in the second round, the Panthers could probably get him at No. 47 overall.Yodny Cajuste, West VirginiaI’ll be honest here and tell you that I don’t know much about Cajuste. CBS ranks him as the No. 58 overall prospect, which places him firmly in the second round. If the Panthers like him enough he could be a target for their second rounder (No. 47). WalterFootball isn’t as high on him, however, and projects that he could go anywhere from the third to fifth round. It goes without saying that if he’s there in the fifth, the Panthers should jump on the opportunity considering the value vs. need formula works in Carolina’s favor.Dalton Risner, Kansas StateAccording to WalterFootball, Risner should play center in the NFL. He’s played both center and right tackle at Kansas State, so he could be a utility lineman if the Panthers could nab him in the later rounds. He’s projected to go later in the draft (Rounds 3-5) so if he’s there at the end of Day 2 the Panthers could see his versatility as a positive. After all, they do need a center as well as a tackle.Andre Dillard Youth Bruce Irvin Jersey , Washington StateWalterFootball ranks Dillard as the best of the Day 2 group, while CBS ranks him as the worst. I don’t know which source to believe, but because I’m a huge fan of Mike Leach I will give WalterFootball the nod here. No, that’s not a very good reason and I fully admit that, but at least I’m not lying to you. He’s probably going to be the guy who surprisingly gets drafted higher than he should, but if he’s still on the board in the third round the Panthers should take a closer look at him. Late round prospectsKaleb McGary, WashingtonMcGary is a right tackle but that shouldn’t eliminate him from Carolina’s board if he’s available as a value pick. While moving Moton to the left isn’t the best decision to make, it’s at least a passable option if the Panthers can get a quality right tackle on Day 3 of the draft. I would rather see them draft a bona fide left tackle within the first two rounds, but if they find a way to sufficiently protect their franchise quarterback in 2019 and beyond I’ll be good with it.Isaiah Prince, Ohio StatePrince is most likely a right tackle at the next level, and I have the same opinion about drafting him as I do McGary. If he’s there in the fifth or sixth round and you see the value in taking him, then do it. You can move Moton to left tackle, or you can just have a quality backup right tackle. Either one of those solutions works. The Panthers need to add more than one offensive lineman to the 2019 roster, so even drafting depth in the later rounds is a good idea.Chuma Edoga Stitched Bruce Irvin Jersey , Southern CalEdoga played right tackle in college, but according to WalterFootball he could be forced to move to guard in the NFL. Even if he has to play guard, if there’s value in taking him on Day 3 of the draft the Panthers should consider it. They need as much offensive line depth as they can get, even if that means taking a lower round guard prospect. Dennis Daley, South CarolinaObviously Daley should go in the first round because of his college pedigree, but for some reason he’s projected to go on Day 3 of the draft. I honestly have no idea why anyone wouldn’t want him on their roster. He’s a locker room leader and a menace for defensive ends to deal with. Seriously, this kid is the real deal. No, his school of choice has nothing to do with my evaluation, what are you even talking about?
